The image is too large

Updated 2026-10-27 · Applies to 1.2.0 and later

Tracing is capped at 4096 px on the long edge. That is deliberate — beyond it, the result is slower to compute and no better to cut.

The 4096 px limit

Images whose long edge exceeds 4096 px are refused before tracing starts. The message is a safety net, not an error: at that size a single design can produce hundreds of thousands of nodes, which no cutting machine handles well and which makes the preview crawl.

What to do

  1. Scale the bitmap down so the long edge is 4096 px or less, with aspect ratio locked.
  2. Trace at that size. The outline quality does not degrade: 4096 px is already far more detail than a knife can follow.
  3. Scale the resulting curves up in CorelDRAW — vectors are resolution-independent, so nothing is lost.
Never upscaleScaling a small bitmap up to reach a “better” resolution only interpolates pixels. It adds file size and produces rounder, blobbier outlines. Use the largest original you have and stop there.

Colour depth and alpha

32-bit images with transparency sometimes trace with an unwanted border where the alpha channel was partially transparent. Flatten onto white first, then trace. The result is far more predictable than fighting the fringe afterwards.

Large format work

For banners and long runs, trace a representative section rather than the whole sheet — the path pattern repeats, and a smaller traced block is easier to arrange than one giant outline.
